About

Its a blog, no wait, a record label, perhaps a movement, a virtual school for mind liberation!

UPSET THE SETUP!

For the record:

In April of 2000, I launched DJEurok.com – a website for my emerging career as a DJ.

<include part about from 9/11 – 2005, doing mad shows with head-roc and grizz and Jarobi (and those two shows in LA we did with Phife), 2004 roma redbull music academy, 2 independently pressed records, Reunion, getting ubanned from the Black Cat, and being broke out before I went back to work>

So fast forward 9 years. I am a hip hop artist (MC/Producer) and DJ in Washington DC – and after spending the better part of the decade gigging and grinding, I’ve got a day job these days and am working on a new album. Upset The Setup (the blog, the shirt, the philosophy) is a project I have been working on since maybe the spring of 2002. Originally the idea was to produce a compilation of DC Hip Hop, but that never really happened. It became the label vehicle for a few independent releases and even had big checks one day.

In May of 2007, I decided to start blogging. Mostly about hip hop, politics, DC, music, records, events, news, culture, youtube videos, tin-foiler conspiracies, random shit like that. I was posting about the Jena 6 when a google search yielded very little and the story just broke on the blogz. We realized upsetthesetup.com could be a vehicle for social change, not just on-line, but through what User #2 – The Minister and I termed “Block Blogging

A few posts have gone viral, and these days we average about 1000 hits a week. I have been a guest on The Kojo Namdi show twice, my music has been featured on NPR, The BBC Radio1, The Australian Broadcasting Company Youth Radio Triple J, and I am good on panels and discussions about hip hop, technology, community organizing, artist DIY strategies. A college dropout gone good, my formal academic training is in Sociology.

So here we are, 2009 – still blogging.

In the mean time, check out my music here and make sure to check “This is DC” – my hip hop DC statehood anthem. It’s huge in Australia, really. I’m also featured on this record by my man Jon Kennedy from the UK.

Dont forget to check UPSET THE SETUP on YOUTUBE!

I cover used to cover hip hop and other styles for the Washington City Paper. I quit because its kind of a tasteless rag, not too mention I was part of a scheme to replace paid journalists with cheap blogger help.

    it’s the element of surprise

  2. I heard you perform at the Black Luv festival and spoke with you briefly afterwards. I work with Faye Williams of Sister Space and Books (reopening before Christmas) and on Tuesday, October 9th from 11am-12 noon Faye has her show Spirit in Action on WPFW 89.3FM. This will be during WPFW’s pledge drive and we will have on Harriet Washington, author of the amazing book “Medical Apartheid.” If we get to play a music break I was hoping to use what you performed at Black Luv which I think began with “Tuskegee, HPV” since we’ll be talking about Tuskegee as well as the HPV vaccine. Where can I find your song?

  3. sometimes i forget that people don’t know that this blog upset the setup was started by and updated by me, dj eurok aka peace justice universal aka pedro urquilla. now you know. peace out.

  4. After seeing your logo around DC about 3 times in the last 24 hours (sticker, sticker, shirt), I checked you out and am glad I did! I’ll be by Marvin tonight and if I can’t get a shirt there I’ll get one online tomorrow. Two really tiny requests: a google calendar and girl-style shirts would be great. See you tonight–I’ll be the one with the camera.

  6. Hey, eurok. How about DC Statehood? Do we get it by 2010?? 2012? So what IS up with having a locked down Democratic Party-majority Set-up in DC yet no Statehood – no Public Hospital, etc, etc. Me I’m thinking Statehood Greens: http://www.dcstatehoodgreens.org. Let’s be in touch. Marian @ Marian’s Blog

  7. Came across your blog this morning, and thought you might be interested in a DVD that Paul Miller (aka DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid) released via Starz/Anchor Bay on November 4, called “Rebirth of Nation.” It’s a remix of D.W. Griffith’s “Birth of a Nation” that was so controversial at the turn of the century due to its graphic and sympathetic portrayal of racism in the post-Civil War South. Paul composed the score, which was performed by Kronos Quartet.

There will be screenings of the DVD all across America in February for Black History Month, so stay tuned…
