So for some reason “Hi Top Fade” is one of the top searches that lands people to this blog. I think it is due to this post here, and the number of hits has been increasing each week.

On Saturday, the GDean from Philly hit me up:

Remember the Date… June 7, 2008. GDean witnessed a bona fide Hi Top Fade worn by a trend-setting high schooler. Corner of 40th street and Walnut, West Philadelphia, PA.

Now I have been predicting this trend for the last three years, and a lot of people have told me, “nah. that’ll never come back.” Well it has. Never is now.

I say that in about three months, no one will think they are uncommon. A flood of flat tops will surround us. This is my experiment. Come September 9, the freshest haircut for going back to school will be the flat top. Think about it.

In the interest of science, I would like to note the following value when discussing hi tops, flat tops, etc:

In the field of hi top fade studies, A unit of Kid = 3 units of play
Therefore, the Play becomes the base unit of flat top measurement. So, upon transition from lets say a season 1 Theo round cut, to the season 2 flat top, the value of the top is equal to half Play

The fade is indeed making a comeback

Beware the imposters

I used to have the kinda of Salvadoran version of a hi top fade, the elsalfro fade. But we don’t really talk about that era of my hair.

Saw some kids rocking the hit top fades on U St. last week. I have to say that I am glad to see it return. I missed it.

  2. I’ve seen ’80s baby hipster hop kids rocking hi-tops with parts and geometric designs.

although it was pretty much inevitable (the return of the dookie rope was the big hint), I don’t know if I’m pleased about it.

  3. Yes, it’s coming back with a vengeance in NYC.
