14th Street NW

21May08

I snapped this on the way to work today on 14th and P NW DC. It is the window lettering of Bob Gold Mitchell Williams which is some bourgeoisie furniture store. It speaks volumes for the transition of 14th Street in this decade.

DCist has the run down on how the city put the locks on the ad-hoc art space at 14th and T. Remember when we reported on the mural back then. Turns out the owners of the building didn’t have any of the proper licenses to be using the space for events. And yo, I snuck into that $200/plate ‘arts’ dinner the Arts Development Corporation had. I have to say, the black tie fund raiser for the source theater in a ‘gritty’ urban loft, complete with graffiti ‘art’ on the walls disturbed me because I knew that the latinos working the catering and the artists who painted those walls weren’t going to see their share off that high brow arts development scam.

Mitchell Williams is going to be pissed that you upset the setup by listing him last.

If you care about the issue of gentrification in DC, right now the frontline battle is DCPS. As the mayor and Chancellor Rhee’s “school reform plan” is a gentrification plan:

Her hiring policies (whether intentional or not) are aimed at whitening the school staff.

The fight to preserve that which is good about our schools is a difficult one. The news media loves the Dangerous Minds narrative of the young magical reformer who comes in and fixes the schools. It’s a narrative that leaves the teachers, parents, and students in the position of being “the evil entrenched system” that resists reform. And we have a very media savvy mayor. It’s really hard for parents, teachers, students, alumni, etc to fight against that. It is an area where I think a “new media” site like this could really help (as various websites set up by ad hoc parents groups are pretty poor).

But even if you aren’t passionate about the DC schools, even if you don’t care about the mayor’s takeover and Rhee’s plans; it’s impossible not to recognize the gaming of the system by appointing Rick Hess and Frederick Wong to be “independent “ “evaluators” of their results.
