From Wired’s Threat Level blog:

Federal agents at the border do not need any reason to search through travelers’ laptops, cell phones or digital cameras for evidence of crimes, a federal appeals court ruled Monday, extending the government’s power to look through belongings like suitcases at the border to electronics.

Another nice way to instill FUD in the general population … meanwhile true criminals aren’t just going to hand over a laptop filled with their plans to destroy America.

I mean this is all just a distraction to prevent us from thinking about things like:

    WHERE’S OSAMA?
    WHERE’S MY RICE?
WHAT COUNTRY ARE WE AT WAR WITH AGAIN?
WHICH COUNTRY HOLDS THE MAJORITY OF OUR NATIONAL DEBT?
WHICH COUNTRY HAS ICBMS AND NUCLEAR WEAPONS?

    Right!?

The laptop searching has been going on since at least last summer. The original intent seemed to be unearthing child pr0n moreso than terrorist plans, though the rationale for it gets changed around depending on which of the two bogeymen is more likely to instill fear in the public at any given time. Better to just have your laptop (and anything else you don’t want violated by federal agents) shipped to your destination, though if you must bring it with you, you could always encrypt the hard drive. The courts have ruled in the past that you’re under no obligation to give federal agents the key to whatever encryption you use.
