HUNGER IS A TOOL OF OPPRESSION!

Hungry and malnourished children suffer much more than discomfort. They learn less, get sick more and suffer the traumas of poverty thus weakening their ability to grow up to be strong, educated and engaged members of society.

It is not ironic that DC has the highest childhood obesity rate in the nation when you consider that 1 in 5 children in the nation’s capitol go to bed hungry every night. They buy chips and 2 for a dollar packs of cookies after school because they know there won’t be much to eat when they get home. If there is, it will most likely come from a box or can and be full of high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils and preservatives-all major contributors to obesity.

In recent years, DC has lost its only urban farm (Community Harvests’ Urban Oasis), most of its community gardens and several non-profits whos missions supported these endeavors. The supposed demand for lofts and chain retail stores has taken away the open land that provided our kids (and elders and adults) with access to free, fresh, nutritious veggies and fruits. In light of this, we must work to hold on to remaining space and develop creative use of spaces at schools, churches and other civic centers.
